School Magazine Cover Deconstructions

One of my first tasks before I can create my school/college magazine front cover is to look at some existing covers and deconstruct them. This will help me to learn more about the typical conventions used on a school/college magazine.
  • Purple connotes royalty—shows they are a top school.
  • ‘The Griffin’ - a majestic mythical creature - shows they are important.
  • Image of a ‘griffin in the corner to reinforce the name.
  • Very bland colour scheme—a lot of empty space.
  • Two ‘top’ students shown on the front—shows what the school is about.
  • Sans serif font shows they are trying to be more in touch with the students.

  • The student has messy hair and is wearing her coat and scarf.
  • The yellow text doesn’t stand out very well.
  • Doesn’t give a lot of information about what’s inside the magazine.
  • Uses sans serif font to be more in touch with the students.

  • More interesting colour scheme.
  • Has images of what is being talked about.
  • The girl is obviously posing.
  • Has a lot of headlines on the cover—tells a lot about what there will be inside.
  • Use of serif font to make it look fun.

  • Very bland colours—a lot of empty space.
  • No preview of the prom images
  • The girl has messy hair and her tie etc. is loose.
  • Uses a sans serif font to be more in touch with the students.

  • More colour than before but still a lot of empty space.
  • Is highlighting the fact that the students write on their hands.
  • Again—no prom photo previews and the writing isn’t quite central.
  • Uses a serif font to seem more proffessional.

  • Simple font—makes it easy for everyone to read
  • Colours used match the colours of the dresses in the preview prom photos.
  • Is appropriately dressed but isn’t wearing a suit like in the griffin pictures.
  • Very bland colour scheme—a lot of empty space.
  • Uses a sans serif font to stay in touch with the students.
